Having been in brand marketing my whole career, the transition to marketing recruitment is a healthy & rewarding challenge. While elements of the role have been a big change, there has been some comfort in relating the experiences of my candidates with my own and also to look at each role like I would a brand brief.
Here's how I see it.
So next time you are considering a new role, start thinking about what you as a brand stand for and that it “meets the client brief” (that’s where we can help). Ensure your key messages are being reinforced at every stage in the process and always bring it back to the brief!
Just hope the brief doesn’t change half way through (no one ever does that, do they?)

By the time we become managers, we are usually well regarded in our area of functional expertise. Most of the time however we’re being asked to excel at something that might be very new – manage and lead people.
Here are just a few tips that Core Element has for new managers – just remember CORE and the fundamentals will help you through.
C – Culture built on credibility
Setting and living your team culture is important from the start. You want to establish what the company culture is but also that of your immediate team. You need to live this too, establishing a sense of credibility in what you say and do. This can be anything from any reports that need to be completed regularly to ways of communicating. You can’t expect people to know how you like things done if you don’t tell them. Build credibility with your people and watch your team culture take shape.
O – Open communications
Open communication applies to your people and your manager. If you ensure there are clear communications around objectives, goals and milestones you are sure to meet your boss’s expectations and have your team deliver on them too.
Open communications also refers to establishing your individual employee motivations. Not everybody is motivated by the same things. One may be motivated by money and the other by recognition, feedback or acceptance. Meet with each team member one-on-one and understand their motivators and preferences and be sure to communicate yours.
R – Respect your people and be respected
You have probably been promoted for doing your autonomous job really well and demonstrating your capacity to learn more and take on more. Problem is there’s not a universal book-of-rules for every new leadership situation so it pays to listen to your common sense. Everyone is different and everyone thrives when they feel they respected. You can go a long way to earning the respect of your team by simply respecting diversity. Treating others with empathy and displaying humility showcases your emotional intelligence (‘EQ’) and trust me, that’s what separates great from good.
E – Empower your people
It might seem hard at first but you need to empower your people. People will perform at their best when they are genuinely mandated and given scope. No-one likes to be managed by the microscope so don’t do it. Set clear deliverables and mutual check-in points and get into coaching mode. Remember you’re role now has broader scope and you’ll miss the mark if you’re fixated on the detail of your team’s individual tasks.
By no means does the CORE list have ALL the answers but hopefully it offers some proven and common sense tips to get you off on the right foot.
One last thing, if all else fails, think of the best manager you’ve had and understand why you got so much out of them. Take that philosophy, shape it and run with it.

I recently attended the Women in Drinks networking event with guest speaker Jane Caro. In her engaging speech Jane mentioned her dislike for the term ‘work/life balance’. As she pointed out, ‘does that mean you don’t have a life when at work?’. It got me thinking.
When terms like this are so engrained in our vernacular (and part of everyday HR speak), it’s easy to adopt the term work/life balance and literally demarcate our lives rather than challenge it. I must admit I have (for many years) referenced the notion of work/life without contemplating its implication, until now.
Surely if ‘life’ is only the time outside of work, we have done something wrong. Why are we working 5 out of 7 days of the week with only two days for life? That doesn’t seem right. Surely the reason professional people work hard and often long hours is because work is actually a rewarding and important component of what makes up our lives.
What about an alternative?
My view is that work should be a place that brings you joy, that develops your mind and challenges you and as a bonus, provides the essential financial reward required to fund the other elements of your life, whilst accommodating family, friends, hobbies etc. A career built around richness, engagement and balance should “harmonise” with the rest of your life.
As for ‘work’, for those that have passion and enthusiasm for what they do, “career” should be the defining noun. It’s not about simply doing a job, it’s about growing and developing a professional path that can last a lifetime. Whilst it may not define who you are, it can be a reflection of what you can achieve, which can give you an immense sense of purpose.
When bringing these two words together, Career Harmony as a term captures the essence of what most of us strive to achieve in the broader quest for happiness. It’s not about separating work and life, it’s about living a life that harmoniously facilitates a career and other interests.
Having struggled to find that ‘work/life balance’ as a working mother, the term Career Harmony works better for me. Perhaps by phrasing the term differently we can start to think refreshingly about the relationship career plays in our whole life. Career Harmony…who doesn’t want that?
In my experience, people looking for roles are often led by what roles are on offer rather than thinking about what they truly want from their next career move. This tends to make sense as they are usually busy with their current position and don’t have too much time to spend on the job hunt. It is often a ‘quick look’ at a job board that sparks the interest in pursuing something as a wait and see.
My question to candidates is always ‘what is their ideal role?’ regardless of the position they may be a candidate for. The reason being, if this is a career move that is going to be at least 3-4 year proposition, you need to assess the opportunity against what you REALLY want, rather than letting the role criteria dictate what you think is best for you. As an executive recruiter , this also helps me assess if someone is a suitable candidate for the role.
So here is a small checklist of things to consider:

Culture & benefits – What are the important hallmarks of the culture you want? Is it openness, inclusion, celebration? Flexibility, bonus, career progression, international relocation, additional annual leave etc

Values – What are the values of the business and do they align to yours?

Hiring Manager - What is it you want in your manager ? Do you need coaching or do you want autonomy or a blend? What are the questions you are going to ask to establish what’s important to you?

Business results – Is the business tracking well/are they in a good position for growth? This may impact the engagement/motivation of employees.

Portfolio & scope– What will you be working on? Is it something you can see yourself believing in? Are you mandated?

Team – Are you part of a cross-functional team or working in a silo? Is the team collaborative? Will you manage a team? Is this important to you?

Location – Is the role location viable? Can you really handle that commute every day?

Travel – Is there a lot of travel? Is this something you want that isn’t offered?
You can rate these factors or tick yes or no to realise what is important to you. By thinking about this in general terms first, you can then assess any roles as they come up against the check list.
You may not be in a position to have everything on the list but at least you can go into the search with a clear idea on what the ‘ideal’ looks like.
Following my post Checklist before you start your job search , which was kindly circulated by many and received generally well, I had a comment about the need for LinkedIn to publish articles that put the focus on the company not just the candidates, so I thought I would address the point.
As a Director at Core Element Recruitment & Career Partners , an Executive Recruitment agency dealing with global and local companies, there are some things we have found important in ensuring great candidates are kept engaged throughout the recruitment process.
So here is a list of what Core Element Recruitment see as the key for employers to successfully engage and secure the best talent:

Honest communication – it is important for honesty and candour in explaining the reason candidates are not applicable or why they are not moving forward in a process. If not, a candidate does not end up with the learning from the process and can’t make refinements for the next role they go for.

Speed – There is only so long an outstanding candidate will wait around for a company, despite the company and role. If a process is delayed, it’s important to be clear about the reasons why. If the candidate is high potential talent, you can bet there are other suitors looking to acquire their services. An employer’s recruitment process offers good insight into its decision-making agility.

Make a judgement call – Most employers hiring process consists of at least two interview rounds and testing as well which is of course an investment in time and energy for the candidates to prepare and participate. If at the end of the process, you are still unsure, trust your gut and make a call rather than initiate another assessment stage.

Allow ample time for case studies – We believe business case studies are an excellent evaluation tool for companies to understand a candidate’s ‘in role’ capabilities but please employers, ensure adequate preparation time is provided, to analyse and prepare recommendations, just like in the real world.

Don’t low ball on salary – We are fortunate to work with clients who respect our candidates and realise their value, almost all the time. Role level bands aside, employers need to realise after the hiring process is complete (and they have found the right fit), it is worth remunerating someone based on their worth and potential and, to ensure they arrive on day one 100% engaged.

Cultural fit is just as important as role fit- When we take a brief for a role, we like to talk equally about what is not on the job description: culture, sub-culture, decision making, speed-to-market, external factors etc. Fit and the ability to assimilate and be effective is crucial; it matters to the existing team and of course the candidate.

Hire with the next job in mind – One of our global clients always hires people with the next role in mind. I.e. does the candidate have the ability/stretch to progress? If ‘people are everything’ and talent acquisition is truly strategic, employers will hire to ensure the capability and horsepower is there for the short, medium and longer term.
The recruitment process is a two-way street and companies wanting to attract and retain the best talent need to ensure they demonstrate rigor, decisiveness and respect throughout the process.
